Fall Program Update

The Summit Newsletter

by Rodney Fuller, Director of Programs DC

For the first time since the fall of 2019, we have over 20 trips planned for City Kids youth this season!

City Kids is excited to welcome our new JET Program Manager, Ginny Brooks, who joined our team full-time in September. Prior to this fall, Ginny served as City Kids Lead Staff at Broken Arrow Ranch leading Rangers, Mountaineers, and Elite campers into the Tetons, Yellowstone, and the Wind River Range. She is from Austin, TX and worked for The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Washington, DC before joining the City Kids team.

Our season began on September 28th with the Fall Campfire Kick-Off event at the Josephine Butler Park Center where our offices are located. City Kids youth and parents from all cohorts gathered to celebrate as youth moved up from one cohort to the next. This was our first opportunity to reconnect with youth since returning from WY this summer. It was great to be back in person in DC with the CK fam and to see the kids enjoying time with the friends they made at camp.

As we look ahead to this season’s trips, a lot of youth are excited about our return to biking, hiking, and camping trips in the DMV. We will also continue the After School Rock Club program that launched in the spring where we will be climbing at DC Bouldering Project (formally Brooklyn Boulders) four times in the next two months. Youth will have the opportunity to build mastery of skill and gain an expanded knowledge of climbing, bouldering, and belaying.

Lastly, we want to express our gratitude to Vail Resort + Katz Amsterdam Foundation’s Epic for Everyone Youth Connection to Winter Sports Program for funding the second year of our Snow Club. Over the course of five trips this winter. City Kids youth will participate in on-hill ski & snowboarding lessons under expert and trained ski instructors. The City Kids Snow Club will hit the slopes at Vail’s Whitetail Ski Resort in Mercersburg, PA, just under a two-hour ride from DC.

If you are local to the DMV and are interested in volunteering for any of these trips, please email hr@citykidsdc.org to learn how to support our programs. Thank you!
