Wild & Wonderful Washington, DC: Strengthening Local Partnerships for Outdoor Learning
Our recent “Wild & Wonderful Washington, DC” event brought outdoor adventure right to our doorstep, proving that meaningful connections with nature can happen anywhere. As part of City Kids Strategic Plan, we are deepening our commitment to DC-based programming, forging strong local partnerships that connect youth to the city’s green spaces, outdoor learning opportunities, and a broader sense of community.
A Day of Discovery and Inspiration
At Horton’s Kids’ Community Center, DC native and one of the few Black master falconers in the country, Rodney Stotts, turned a typical morning into an unforgettable experience. Rodney introduced participants to birds of prey and shared his personal journey—one of transformation, conservation, and mentorship. His work highlights how the outdoors can be a source of healing and empowerment, particularly for young people navigating life’s challenges.
Thanks to our partnership with the DC Environmental Film Festival, participants also had the opportunity to watch The Falconer, a compelling documentary that explores Rodney’s story and the role falconry played in changing his life.
This special event highlighted our longstanding partnership with Horton’s Kids, a nonprofit serving youth in Ward 8 by providing wraparound support in academics, youth development, and health & wellness. Horton’s Kids not only co-hosted this experience but has been instrumental in connecting youth to City Kids—many participants in our programs are also part of the Horton’s Kids community, reflecting the strong interwoven network of support available to DC youth.
After lunch, provided by DC Central Kitchen, the group ventured outside to Fort Dupont Park, one of DC’s largest green spaces, where the National Park Service led a guided hike. Participants stepped into the role of naturalists, exploring the local ecosystem, and discovering the hidden wonders of their own backyard.
Building Stronger DC-Based Programs Through Partnerships
City Kids’ DC-based Programs are designed to help youth see their city’s outdoor spaces as a source of healing, community, and personal growth, while also building confidence in outdoor skills. Our 2023 data shows real impact: 78% of participants reported feeling more connected to DC’s green spaces through our programming.
These connections grow stronger through partnerships with organizations that share our commitment to youth development. Our Wild & Wonderful Washington, DC trip was made possible through the support of these incredible partners:
Horton’s Kids – A nonprofit serving youth in Ward 8, providing academic support, youth development, and health & wellness programs to help children succeed.
Rodney Stotts – A master falconer, educator, and conservationist who uses birds of prey as a tool for personal growth and empowerment, particularly for youth.
DC Environmental Film Festival (DCEFF) – A festival dedicated to showcasing films that inspire environmental awareness and action through storytelling.
DC Central Kitchen – A nonprofit working to combat hunger and poverty by providing nutritious meals and workforce development programs.
National Park Service (NPS) at Fort Dupont Park – Offers expertise in local ecology and outdoor education.
The Wild & Wonderful Washington, DC trip was a powerful reminder that nature is not far away—it’s right here in our own city. With the support of incredible local partners, City Kids is continuing to create lasting outdoor experiences that inspire, educate, and empower DC youth.
Trips like this are made possible by our supporters, including our Endurance Partners who provide vital monthly support that sustains the organization year-round. We have set the goal to 25 new monthly donors this year– join us in making wild & wonderful experiences accessible to DC youth every month.
