Winter & Spring Programming Update

The Summit Newsletter

After a few weeks off during our winter break, City Kids participants and staff were excited to resume programming as the Winter/Spring 2021 Program Season launched in early February.

In addition to camper and JET cohort-level programming, we are virtually offering all CK youth programs to continue deepening connections with youth across all age groups. Our program team has created monthly events for all program levels to come together. We will also continue to provide weekly wellness hours and bi-weekly movement classes.

Mountaineers (ages 11-13) will have a robust program this spring as they prepare for their return to Jackson, Wyoming this summer for their first-ever City Kids backpacking experience! Using Google Classrooms in February and March, an outdoor living skill will be introduced or re-introduced every week as part of the preparation for one of many memorable backpacking trips. We will freshen up on how to fit a backpack, how to pack a backpack, setting up a tent, choosing a campsite, learning knots, maps, stoves, and more!

This season’s Elite programs (ages 14-15)  are focused on the mastery of basic outdoor living skills. We will review topics such as; packing a backpack, camp cooking, and how to use a whisperlite stove. Activities will prepare Elite participants for longer backcountry trips this summer. We understand that school schedules are overwhelming, so we designed a new “on-demand” program structure for our camper cohort levels. Weekly activities are posted every Monday via Google Classroom. Each activity includes a video or slideshow followed by reflection questions which are to be submitted by the end of the week.

This season’s Leadership programs (ages 15-16) are focused on finding their personal power. The Leadership Real Talk series is geared towards shaping participants into community leaders. Participants will begin to develop an understanding and value of unique personality traits and leadership styles. Weekly activities will prepare the Leadership participants to engage in Social Justice Workshop discussions this summer. Participants will begin to view themselves as leaders at City Kids as they prepare to transition into the JET world.

JETs (ages 15-18) have a very exciting and informative season at City Kids as they prepare for the professional world and for their return to Jackson, Wyoming this summer! JET participants attend virtual JET Training meetings every other week to learn and practice skills for their internships, summer placements, and JET Camp Leader’s skills. JETs will be learning relevant topics such as facilitation skills, role modeling, professionalism, and financial literacy, and email literacy.

We are very excited to announce that In-Person Day Trips have been tentatively scheduled to start on Saturday, April 3rd. We are in the process of making plans to resume our favorite outdoor adventures (hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, outdoor rock climbing, etc.) and are revamping our COVID-19 Policies and Procedures to ensure that we’re able to conduct programs while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 exposure.
