Polo Clinic with Recreational Habits
On June 4th, 2022, twelve participants of the brand new Ranger Cohort attended a polo clinic that was led by City Kids partner organization, Recreational Habits. Recreational Habits is a clothing brand that aims to bring the exclusive world of recreational field sports and country living to traditionally underrepresented communities.
To start the day off, youth boarded a bus to head out to Middleburg, Virginia. Once they arrived, they were introduced to their horses for the morning and taken on a beautiful trail ride. Then, with mallets in hand, they were taught the basics of polo and had the opportunity to practice hitting balls while riding. While many found it challenging at first, several kids really got the hang of it and were hitting the ball across the arena with ease by the end of the lesson. Once they understood the basics of polo, youth and instructors were split into two teams for a lively match of foot polo.
The day was capped off with a trip to Great Meadows where the participants watched the Recreational Habits team, led by Marlon Muller, co-founder of RH, play in an actual polo match at Twilight Polo.
When asked about the event, CK Executive Director, Sarah Cryder said, “The kids were overtaken with excitement as they watched the match with the basics they learned earlier that day fresh in their minds… they cheered and jeered as they followed the action back and forth!”
While this was City Kids first experience with the sport of polo, it will certainly not be our last!
