Summer Camp in Jackson

The Summit Newsletter

As the Mountaineer cohort returned to their home away from home, you could see the smiles spread across their faces as they stepped off the bus at Broken Arrow Ranch. After a long 14-hour day of travel filled with stories of past adventures and anticipation of the trips to come, Summer Camp at City Kids officially began on Saturday, June 25th.

Seventh and eighth graders kicked off “Session One” of camp with backpacking trips in the Wind River Range and Gros Ventre Wilderness that were followed by two-night canoeing trips in Grand Teton National Park. In between their trips, they filled their time on the ranch with horseback riding, swimming, and everyone’s favorite game, “9-square.”

“Session Two” began on July 14th when our brand new Ranger cohort (6th & 7th graders) flew out to Wyoming for the very first time. They will spend their two weeks traveling to Yellowstone National Park for a 3-day car camping trip and a 3-day canoeing trip in Grand Teton National Park. Click here to see their special welcome at the airport!

The Elite and Leadership cohorts (9th & 10th graders) will fly out on August 1st to begin “Session Three.” Elite campers will go on multi-day backpacking and sea kayaking trips while the Leadership campers will spend 24 hours alone in the wilderness with only the bare essentials. The Leadership cohort will also go on a rock climbing trip and will wrap their session up by white water kayaking on the Snake River.

All the while, our Internship and Career Exploration Sessions re-opened for the first time since 2019, offering our 11th and 12th grade JETs opportunities to participate in a job shadow or a four-day internship in town. JETs also participated in post-secondary planning workshops and a variety of outdoor activities including camping, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. The final JET session begins at the end of July with the “Outdoor Session.” JETs will hike the Teton Crest Trail in Grand Teton National Park, after which four JETs will continue on to climb the Grand Teton.
