Spring 2022 Program Update

The Summit Newsletter

By Rodney Fuller, Director of Programs DC

Greetings City Kids Family! Spring has arrived in DC, and with it, exciting updates from City Kids. Our extraordinary program team just completed a series of five Snow Club trips to Whitetail resorts in Mercersburg, PA. All cohorts were represented and the youth performed amazingly on the slopes.

In addition to the launch of our Snow Club, last week, we kicked off our new CK Bouldering Club. Over the course of five weeks, Arii Sylvers, our new Program Associate will be leading trips to DC’s Brooklyn Boulders every Tuesday and Thursday as part of our afterschool programming. We hope to expand this club to Movement Gyms as well in an effort to offer expanded rock climbing experiences for CK youth.

City Kids is also in full recruitment mode and will host an Applicant Family Fun Day for prospective new City Kids participants and families on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the City Kids office in Columbia Heights. This will be our first opportunity to interact with prospective applicants and their families and the program team is giddy with anticipation.

Victor Medina, our new Ranger & Mountaineer Program Manager, will soon be leading the Mountaineer cohort on their first backpacking and overnight trip of the Spring 2022 season. This will be a trip full of fun and connecting with nature!

Last, and most notably, our JETs continue to push the bar higher each season. This summer, JET Kyla Jackson will participate in the NOLS Rocky Mountain Whitewater River Expedition in Wyoming and JET Dylawn Calhoun will head to Alaska to be a part of Wilderness Adventures Alaska High Trails experience. The entire CK family is proud of them and can’t wait to hear all of their exciting tales from the backcountry.
